Modern Foreign Language

“Learning a language enriches the curriculum. It provides excitement, enjoyment and challenge for children, helping to create enthusiastic learners and to develop positive attitudes to language learning throughout life.”  (DfES 2005 )

The focus language taught in our school is French. The biggest emphasis is on speaking and listening. Reading and writing are introduced at a later ability and age appropriate stage. We begin in F1 with simple words, progressing to Y6 with conversational French which we hope will lay the foundation for future language study.

We aim to foster an interest and confidence in language learning by teaching French through songs, rhymes, stories, games, role play and daily routines. The children are taught to ask and answer questions, memorise words, phrases, sentences and rhymes, interpret meanings and to understand basic language and grammar. They are taught correct pronunciation. The lessons are active, all inclusive and fun.
